About flood sandbags

Flood control sandbags slow and redirect shallow water away from doorways, garage doors, basement window wells and low points in a yard. Placed correctly, a staggered wall of 30 to 40 lb bags helps keep water out of a building and buys time during a spring freshet, ice-jam flood or heavy rain. Order filled bags for speed or empty bags to fill at a municipal sand pile, and plan your order before forecasts trigger a rush.

Flood Control Sandbags FAQ

Clear the ground of debris, then lay the first row lengthwise along the water’s path with folded tops facing upstream. Stagger each row like brickwork so joints never line up, and tamp every bag into place. Keep the base about three times as wide as the wall is high. A sheet of polyethylene under and over the water side improves the seal. Always follow your municipality’s flood guidance.

No sandbag wall is fully watertight, and sandbags do not stop water that rises through floor drains, sewers or the soil. They work best against shallow surface water at doors, garage openings and window wells. Combine them with a backwater valve, a working sump pump and clear eavestroughs, and move valuables out of the basement when a flood warning is issued.
